Garage Floor Coating Preparation Checklist
A garage coating project begins before installation day. Use this homeowner checklist to prepare for an estimate in Bend, Redmond, Sisters or another Central Oregon community. The contractor must assess the concrete and specify the preparation; this guide is not a do-it-yourself installation procedure.
Before the estimate: document what is already there
Measure the approximate length and width. Note paint or sealer, peeling patches, oil stains, visible cracks, uneven areas and places where water collects. Tell the estimator about previous repairs or coating attempts. Photos can help an initial conversation, but they do not replace a site assessment.
Should I remove old paint before requesting a quote?
Ask the contractor first. Include existing coatings in the estimate discussion so removal, disposal and any additional preparation are clearly priced. Do not assume a new coating can simply cover peeling material, or start applying cleaners and treatments without asking what the proposed system requires.
Cracks and moisture need a specific discussion
Ask how visible cracks and moisture conditions will be assessed, what repairs are included and which findings could change the scope. A decorative coating is not a promise to resolve structural movement or every moisture issue. Get limitations and warranty exclusions in writing.
Clear the garage for the whole project
- List shelving, cabinets, appliances, bikes and stored items that occupy the floor.
- Confirm who moves each item and whether moving is included in the quote.
- Arrange secure temporary storage that does not block the work area.
- Plan vehicle parking through the full return-to-service period.
- Ask separately about steps, stem walls and fixed equipment.
Winter access and an attached garage
Explain whether the garage is heated or unheated and whether it connects directly to the home. Ask the installer to determine temperature, ventilation and access requirements for the actual products. Arrange snow clearance and a clear arrival route. Do not improvise a heating plan; agree on the contractor's site requirements before the date is confirmed.
Before installation day
Have a written scope, a named contractor contact and a plan for date changes. Confirm when people, pets, stored items and vehicles can return. These may have different timelines. Ask what cleaning products and maintenance routine the completed system requires.
Send a useful project brief
Your town, approximate floor area, current surface condition and preferred timing are a useful start. Calculate approximate floor area, review winter installation questions and use the written quote checklist before choosing an installer.
